Understanding Children’s Inner World Through Creativity & Expression

-JOY-

“a feeling of great pleasure & happiness”

Two Turtles Meditating Aidan, Age 11

Joy is a big, bright feeling that fills you up when something wonderful happens, like laughing with a friend, playing your favourite game, or seeing someone you love. It’s like sunshine in your heart! Joy can come from little things too, like a hug, a kind word, or spotting a rainbow in the sky.

Can you think of a moment when you felt really joyful? What were you doing, and who were you with? What would joy look like if it were a colour, an animal, or a sound?

-SADNESS-

“a feeling of unhappiness”

Sadness is a heavy feeling we get when something doesn’t go the way we hoped, like when we miss someone, lose something special, or have a tough day. It can feel like a grey cloud in your heart. But sadness is okay, it helps us understand our feelings, and it can bring people closer when we talk about it.

Can you remember a time when you felt sad? What helped you feel a little better? If sadness were a colour, a weather type, or a sound what would it be?

-CALM-

“a feeling or state of peacefulness, without worry”

Sad Face
Evie, Age 6

Calm is a peaceful, quiet feeling, like sitting by a lake with no waves, or taking a deep breath after a busy day. When you’re calm, your body feels relaxed, your mind feels clear, and your heart slows down. It’s a feeling that helps you rest, think, and feel safe.

When do you feel the most calm? Is it when you’re reading, listening to music, or lying in bed? If calm were a place, what would it look like? Can you draw it or describe it?

-ANGER-

“a strong feeling of annoyance or displeasure”

Two Turtles Meditating Aidan, Age 11

Anger is a strong, fiery feeling that pops up when something feels unfair, frustrating, or hurtful, like when someone takes your toy or you’re told “no” to something you really want. Everyone feels angry sometimes! It’s okay to feel anger, but it’s important to find kind and safe ways to let it out.

What does anger feel like in your body? What helps you feel better when you’re mad, taking deep breaths, talking to someone, or walking away? If anger were a weather storm, what kind would it be?

-AMUSEMENT-

“the experience of finding something funny”

Two Turtles Meditating Aidan, Age 11

Amusement is the feeling you get when something is funny, silly, or surprising in a fun way, like watching a funny video, hearing a joke, or playing a silly game with a friend. It’s the kind of feeling that makes you smile or laugh out loud!

What’s something that always makes you laugh? Can you remember a time you laughed so hard your belly hurt? If amusement were a sound or a shape, what would it be?

Did you know there are lots of different emotions, even ones that mix together?

Sometimes we feel happy and nervous, or excited and a little scared. Emotions can be big or small, simple or complicated, and that’s what makes them so interesting!

Your art can help you explore all kinds of feelings, even ones you don’t have a name for yet. What other emotions can you think of? How would you show them in your artwork?
